On this occasion, the MMSA would like to increase awareness of affected people who are struggling with this illness and also those who have been diagnosed as HIV positive. Apart from dealing with the fact that AIDS is an incurable disease and that these patients have to take medication for the rest of their lives, they also have to put up with stigmatisation due to other people’s prejudice and lack of knowledge. This year’s World AIDS Day activities will be held over a 3-day period starting on Wednesday 28th November on campus. The first day will be dedicated to outreaching where informative leaflets about the virus and the disease that results from it will be distributed, as will condoms (donated by mylilo.com) which are the only contraceptives that can be used against the transmission of the virus. Cupcakes (kindly donated by Golden Harvest) will be sold throughout the day, and proceeds will go towards Xefaq, a Caritas Malta Service. On Wednesday 28th November during degree plus hours, there will also be a seminar is being held on Campus where professionals will be giving talks regarding the comorbidities of HIV & AIDS as well as the emotional and mental disposition of people living with this disease. On Friday 30th November at 17.00 hrs, a Candle Vigil will leave from near the Triton fountain outside Valletta and proceed to St. George’s Square and back. Candles will be given out to those present to raise awareness and show solidarity with the victims of AIDS. On Saturday 1st December, the MMSA will join the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate at Valletta at St. George’s Square from 9.00 hrs till 13.00 hrs for another outreach for the public where we will be forming a human ribbon. To end the campaign with a bang, everyone is invited to XO Lounge & Cocktail Bar (ex-Fuego) in Paceville, where the MMSA PLAYSAFE Party will be held, starting at 21.30 hrs. The entrance is free with great offers at the bar and a cocktail hour between 22.00 and 23.00 hrs.
